Why Whiteheads and Blackheads Turn Different Colors: How Oxidation Inside the Pore Makes the Difference

Whiteheads and blackheads are both early forms of acne that show up when a pore gets clogged. They look completely different on the surface, but they start from the exact same place, dead skin cells and sebum tangling together and plugging the pore opening. What happens next is where the two paths split. If the pore stays sealed while the plug sits under the skin, you get a whitehead. If the pore opening stays open to the air, you get a blackhead. The thing that actually separates the two is not pigment, it is a chemical reaction called oxidation.

How Does a Pore Plug Actually Form?

Every pore is connected to a sebaceous gland underneath it. That gland is constantly producing sebum, the oily substance that keeps skin moisturized. At the same time, old skin cells are always shedding off the pore wall.

Under normal conditions, this sebum and dead skin work their way out through the pore and off the skin without any trouble. But when sebum production ramps up, or dead skin cells do not shed on schedule and start clumping together, things change. The sebum and dead skin stick together and form a plug at the pore opening, what dermatologists call a comedone.

At this early stage, there is no difference yet between what will become a whitehead and what will become a blackhead. Same ingredients, same process. The fork in the road comes down to one thing, whether that plug stays completely sealed inside the pore or the opening stays exposed to the outside air.

Whiteheads: When the Plug Stays Sealed

Whiteheads are known medically as closed comedones. The pore opening is covered by a thin layer of skin, which keeps the trapped sebum and dead skin from ever making contact with outside air.

Because everything is sealed off inside the skin, there is no reason for the color to shift. The sebum and dead skin keep their original color, a pale, off white or light apricot tone. That is why a whitehead looks like a small, pale bump sitting just under the skin's surface.

Touch one and it feels firm and slightly raised, because the contents have been compressed and packed inside the pore. They tend to show up in clusters, especially in oil-prone areas like the nose and forehead.

Why Blackheads Look Black: It's Oxidation, Not Melanin

Blackheads are called open comedones. They are made of the same material as whiteheads, but there is no skin layer covering the pore opening, so the contents sit directly exposed to air.

Here is where a lot of people get it wrong. Many assume a blackhead's dark color comes from trapped dirt or grime, but that is not actually what is happening. It is not dirty skin turning black, it is a chemical shift, the components inside the plug oxidizing once they meet air and darkening as a result.

Sebum contains a lipid called squalene. Lipid is just a fancy word for an oily substance, and when this one reacts with oxygen, it converts into an oxidized lipid that turns visibly darker. On top of that, melanin, the pigment stored inside dead skin cells, oxidizes too once it is exposed to air, adding even more darkness. Melanin itself is originally produced by a separate cell type called a melanocyte, which hands the pigment off to skin cells, so by the time it ends up mixed into the pore plug, it darkens right along with everything else. Both reactions happening together are what makes the whole thing look black to the eye.

So the dark color of a blackhead is not caused by one single thing, it is two separate reactions stacking on top of each other. Lipid oxidation darkens the color first, and melanin oxidation deepens it further from there. In that sense, a blackhead is not simply a buildup of grime, it is a visible trace of a chemical reaction your own skin produced.

Why Does Contact with Air Change the Color?

Oxidation is not some exotic phenomenon. It is the same thing that happens when you slice an apple or a banana and leave it out, the cut surface turns brown. Compounds inside the fruit react with oxygen in the air and change structurally, which changes how they absorb and reflect light, and the result reads to our eyes as brown or black.

The same thing plays out in a blackhead. With the pore opening exposed, the lipid components in sebum stay in continuous contact with oxygen. As time passes, more oxidized material builds up and the color keeps deepening. That is why a fresh blackhead often looks light brown, while one that has been sitting for a few days looks noticeably darker.

Whiteheads never go through this at all. Since there is no opening for air to reach the contents, oxidation simply does not happen, and the original color stays intact. The color difference between the two really comes down to one variable, how much air exposure the plug has had, not any difference in the ingredients themselves.

Both Are Early-Stage Acne

Whiteheads and blackheads are both classified as non-inflammatory acne, meaning there is no redness, swelling, or pain, just a clogged pore.

The issue is that if left alone, this stage can progress further. Once Cutibacterium acnes, the bacteria linked to acne, starts multiplying inside the clogged pore, things shift. As this bacteria breaks down sebum, it produces irritating byproducts that trigger an inflammatory response in the pore wall.

Once inflammation enters the picture, changes tend to follow in this order.

  • The area around the pore turns red and slightly raised, becoming a papule, as inflammatory cells gather in the surrounding tissue.
  • It can progress into a pustule filled with pus, which is really just the leftover debris from white blood cells that died fighting off the inflammation.
  • If inflammation spreads deeper, it can turn into a nodule or a cyst, as it breaks through the pore wall and extends into the surrounding dermis.

That is why starting care at the whitehead or blackhead stage matters, it helps cut down on inflammatory acne and scarring down the line.

How Treatment Differs Based on Oxidation

The overall care approach for whiteheads and blackheads is largely the same. Ingredients that gently clear dead skin and regulate sebum production help with both. BHA ingredients like salicylic acid are oil soluble, which lets them work their way into oily buildup inside the pore and dissolve dead skin and sebum from within. Retinoids help normalize the cycle of skin cell turnover, so fewer plugs form in the first place.

Blackheads, though, have one extra variable to account for, oxidation. That makes sun protection genuinely useful here. UV exposure accelerates the oxidation of skin and sebum components, so blocking it ahead of time can slow down how quickly a blackhead darkens further.

Whiteheads need a bit more patience, since the pore stays sealed and exfoliating ingredients need time to penetrate deep enough to work. Consistent, long-term use tends to beat short bursts of aggressive treatment.

Cleansing matters for both, but it is worth knowing what it can and cannot do. Washing your face does not reverse oxidation. Once a component has oxidized, it does not go back to its original color just because you rinsed it off, it needs to clear out of the pore naturally or with help from active ingredients before it fades. So instead of trying to erase an existing blackhead overnight, a more realistic goal is steady care that reduces how many new ones form.

Why You Shouldn't Squeeze Them Yourself

Both types tempt people to just squeeze them out by hand. But applying pressure that way can stretch or tear the pore wall. Pores are more fragile than they seem, and repeated forceful pressure damages the wall itself.

On top of that, bacteria on your hands or whatever tool you are using can get pushed into the pore through the pressure point and trigger inflammation. Once inflammation sets in, it can actually speed up the progression to the papules and pustules described earlier. Even if it looks like you cleared it out, lingering damage to the pore wall can leave behind scarring or an enlarged pore.
