Why Onda and Titanium Get Paired in One Visit, and the Logic Behind How Deep Each Heat Reaches

If you have looked into lifting treatments, you may have come across the name Ontanium. A quick search usually turns up the same explanation: it is what people call the combo of getting Onda and Titanium done back to back on the same day. The name makes it sound like a single new machine, but it is really two devices with completely different operating principles, run in sequence during one visit. Here is why clinics pair them, and what each one is actually doing under the skin.
Where the Name Ontanium Comes From
Ontanium is a mashup, the front half of Onda fused with the tail end of Titanium. It is not a trademarked machine owned by one clinic. It is closer to a convenient shorthand for a program that bundles two treatments into a single appointment.
So if you go looking for a standalone Ontanium device, you will not find one. What exists are the Onda machine and the Titanium machine, each doing its own thing, scheduled one after the other on the same day. One name, but underneath it, two treatments built on entirely different physics. Once that clicks, the rest of the explanation is much easier to follow.
How Onda's Microwave Approach Works
Onda runs on microwave energy, the same category of energy that powers a kitchen microwave oven. The comparison is not just for flavor either. Just as a microwave oven heats food by vibrating water molecules inside it, Onda vibrates the water-rich tissue under your skin and generates heat right there, at the source.
The signature trait of this approach is that the heat spreads fairly evenly. Unlike a laser, which gets absorbed by a specific color or target and concentrates heat in one spot, microwave energy reacts broadly across any tissue with water content. That is why it is described as distributing heat fairly uniformly regardless of skin tone or pigmentation.
Depth control comes down to handpiece size. The 3mm handpiece targets the dermis, the layer where collagen lives, to stimulate a firming response. The 7mm handpiece reaches further down into the subcutaneous fat layer, stimulating fat cells directly. Same microwave energy, but which layer it reaches depends entirely on handpiece depth.
How Titanium's Triple-Wavelength Laser Works
Titanium is a diode laser device that fires three wavelengths at once: 755nm, 810nm, and 1064nm. Different wavelengths penetrate to different depths. Shorter wavelengths get absorbed closer to the surface, while longer wavelengths travel deeper into the tissue.
Think of the three wavelengths as ladders of different heights. A short ladder only reaches a low shelf, while a long ladder reaches something much higher, or in this case, much deeper. Set up three different-length ladders at once, and you can work on several levels at the same time.
When multiple wavelengths fire together like this, heat reaches all the way down to the SMAS, the thin fascia layer wrapped around the muscle beneath your skin. SMAS is the layer most lifting treatments are designed to target, and when it heats up and contracts, the skin sitting above it gets pulled along, which is described as producing that immediate firming sensation. At the same time, the shorter wavelengths interact with pigment and vessels closer to the surface, which is credited with smoothing out skin texture at the same time.
Why Pair Onda and Titanium at All?
The two devices get paired because each one is good at a different depth. Onda's microwave heat spreads wide and even, which makes it well suited for warming the dermis and fat layer gently and steadily. What it is not as good at is producing an immediate tightening pull.
Titanium works the opposite way. Its focused laser energy reaches the SMAS layer quickly and produces an immediate contraction. But because a laser travels along a beam path, it takes relatively longer to heat a wide area as evenly as Onda does.
So when the two are run back to back, Onda first warms a broad stretch of dermis and fat evenly, and Titanium then adds an immediate contraction response at a deeper layer on top of that. Because the heat comes from two different physical mechanisms, combining them covers a range of depth that neither device reaches alone.
This is a different approach from just cranking up one device and repeating it. Firing the same microwave harder, or passing the same laser over the skin more times, mostly piles more energy into the depth that already absorbs it well, without opening up any new layer. Two energies built on genuinely different physics, on the other hand, naturally respond at different layers, which is what widens the range of depth being treated.
How the Two Devices Cover Different Depths
Here is a breakdown of which layer each device handles during a session.
- Onda 3mm handpiece, dermis: Microwave energy absorbs evenly into water-rich dermal tissue, stimulating collagen-producing cells.
- Onda 7mm handpiece, subcutaneous fat: With the deeper handpiece, microwave energy reaches further down and delivers thermal stimulation to fat cells.
- Titanium's longer wavelength, SMAS: Wavelengths like 1064nm reach deep tissue and contract the fascia layer, producing an immediate firming effect.
- Titanium's shorter wavelength, skin surface: Wavelengths like 755nm absorb closer to the epidermis, working to even out pigment and texture.
Laid out this way, it becomes clear there is some overlap between the two devices, and there are also layers only one of them can reach. Pairing them is, in the end, an attempt to close as many of those gaps as possible.
Does Combining Them Change the Downtime or Irritation?
Getting both treatments on the same day means your skin absorbs more total heat than it would from either one alone. Because of that, redness or mild swelling right after the session is often described as lasting a bit longer than it would with a single treatment. That said, this is usually framed as mild, not the kind of downtime that disrupts your daily routine.
Some clinics build in a short gap between the two treatments, or adjust the order and intensity based on how your skin looks that day. The point is to avoid stacking too much heat onto one area at once. More combined heat means more attention paid to aftercare, essentially.
What to Know Before Considering Ontanium
Getting both devices does not simply double the results. Because each one covers a different depth, it is better understood as each device filling in what the other misses, rather than doubling the same effect. That is why it tends to come up as an option for people who want to address firmness across the whole face rather than one specific spot.
Since a laser is involved, it is worth discussing your skin type and any recent tanning during your consultation beforehand. Shorter wavelengths respond more to pigment, so if your skin is on the darker side or you have been in the sun recently, the treatment intensity may need to be adjusted.
If you are pregnant, or if you have had another treatment done recently in the same area, it is also worth mentioning ahead of time. Both devices work by generating heat, and adding more heat to tissue that is still recovering from earlier stimulation can affect how quickly it bounces back. Results vary from person to person depending on skin condition and degree of aging, so going over your specific situation in a consultation is the most reliable way to know what to expect.
