How Carboxytherapy Uses CO2 to Boost Blood Flow and Break Down Fat: Sessions and Areas

The idea of deliberately putting gas into your body can sound strange at first. But carboxytherapy actually traces back to French spa treatments, and today it has become a well-established option for managing fat and circulation. The method itself is simple: a fine needle delivers small amounts of medical-grade carbon dioxide just under the skin, into the fat layer.

The key thing to understand is that CO2 doesn't burn fat on its own. Its real job is to send a signal telling the body to pump blood harder to that spot. Following that signal, blood flow increases, and the extra blood carries more oxygen and nutrients to the area, creating conditions that favor fat breakdown and tissue repair. Below, we walk through why that happens and where it tends to be used.

Why does CO2 make blood vessels widen?

Your blood vessels are constantly monitoring the CO2 level in the surrounding tissue. Cells that are working hard release more CO2, so the body reads a spike in CO2 as a sign that oxygen is urgently needed nearby. In response, the local vessels widen on their own and send more blood to the area, much like a construction site calling in extra crew the moment it looks understaffed.

Carboxytherapy essentially triggers this response on purpose. Injecting CO2 into the fat layer causes a sudden local spike in CO2 concentration. The body reads this as an emergency shortage of oxygen and widens the small vessels nearby to push more blood through. This is called vasodilation, literally the blood vessel "pipes" getting wider so more blood can flow through them.

The injected gas doesn't linger in the body long. It usually clears out through the blood and lungs within 10 to 20 minutes. But the boost in blood flow it triggers lasts for 2 to 3 days after treatment. So the real starting point of carboxytherapy isn't the gas itself, it's the increase in circulation the gas sets off, and that's worth keeping in mind.

How does wider blood flow lead to fat breakdown?

Fat tissue naturally has a sparser network of blood vessels than most other tissue. That means fatty areas tend to have relatively sluggish circulation to begin with. When circulation is slow, the energy stored inside fat cells has a harder time getting released, and waste products build up more slowly too.

Once carboxytherapy increases blood flow, that whole picture shifts. Blood moves through more actively, delivering oxygen and nutrients to fat cells more often and clearing away the byproducts of fat breakdown faster. Think of it like opening a new channel through a stagnant puddle. Just as running water is less likely to sit and stagnate, better circulation keeps the environment around fat cells from getting stuck in place.

On top of that chemical signal, there's a physical one: the injected gas causes the fat tissue to swell and press slightly, and this mechanical stimulation is reported to activate the enzymes that break down stored fat inside fat cells. In other words, a chemical signal and a physical nudge work together to create conditions that favor fat breakdown.

What happens inside fat cells when oxygen increases?

The process of converting stored fat into usable energy is called lipolysis. It happens in several steps, and a good portion of those steps depend on oxygen. When oxygen is scarce, this process slows down.

When carboxytherapy raises blood flow, more oxygen reaches the area along with it, giving the lipolysis process a more generous fuel supply. There's also a physiological bonus at play: CO2 itself helps hemoglobin in the blood release oxygen into tissue more readily. Hemoglobin's normal job is to grab oxygen and carry it around, but when the surrounding CO2 level rises, it lets go of that oxygen more easily, similar to a courier dropping off a package faster once they're near the delivery address.

Put together, the rise in blood flow and the rise in oxygen supply work in tandem to create favorable conditions for fat cells to break down and clear out stored fat. That said, this kind of change rarely shows up dramatically after a single session. It tends to build up gradually over 6 to 10 sessions.

Why is carboxytherapy used for cellulite?

Cellulite is the dimpled, uneven appearance that often shows up on the thighs or buttocks. There's no single cause, but slow circulation in the area combined with the way connective tissue bands push fat cells upward unevenly are both thought to play a role. Slow circulation makes it easier for fluid and waste to sit trapped between tissues, and this can look like puffiness that makes the surface appear more uneven.

Carboxytherapy takes aim at exactly that stagnant circulation. As blood flow picks up, the channels for trapped fluid and waste to drain properly widen, and some reports suggest this can ease surface unevenness to a degree. Combine that with the reduction in fat cell volume, and the surface tends to look smoother.

That said, cellulite has several overlapping causes, so it's more realistic to think of carboxytherapy as one piece of a broader management approach centered on circulation, rather than expecting it to erase cellulite on its own.

How does it help with stretch marks?

Stretch marks form when skin stretches rapidly over a short period and the collagen fibers in the dermis can't keep up, tearing in the process. Collagen is like a supporting pillar that keeps skin firm, and once those pillars snap, the gap fills in with thin, weaker scar tissue. That's why stretch mark areas tend to have fewer blood vessels and slower regeneration than the surrounding skin.

Carboxytherapy approaches this area the same way, by boosting circulation. More blood flow means fibroblasts, the cells that build new collagen, get a bigger supply of oxygen and nutrients, and this stimulation is reported to encourage collagen production to some extent. Think of fibroblasts as the workers who physically build skin's collagen pillars: give them more material and energy, and the work speeds up.

As a result, the thin, sunken texture typical of stretch marks is reported to gradually fill in over 8 to 12 weeks, with the color fading as well. That said, the response tends to be stronger in stretch marks that are relatively recent and still red or purplish, rather than older ones that have already turned white and firm.

Why do sessions and technique vary by area?

Carboxytherapy isn't approached the same way everywhere on the body, because fat thickness, vessel density, and skin sensitivity all vary by area. Three factors drive that difference.

  • Areas with thicker fat, like the abdomen or thighs, require the gas to reach a wider range, so injections are spread across more points, and 10 to 15 sessions are typically needed. The thicker the fat layer, the longer it takes for the improved circulation to spread evenly.
  • Areas with thinner fat, like under the chin or on the upper arms, tend to respond faster with a relatively smaller amount. When the tissue is thinner, the target fat cells are more densely packed within the area the injected gas can reach.
  • For surface-level concerns like cellulite or stretch marks, injections go shallower and are spaced more closely together. Since the problem sits in the dermis and just below it, matching that depth is what lets the improved circulation reach exactly the right spot.

Sessions are commonly spaced 1 to 2 weeks apart, with 8 to 12 sessions in total. Because circulation improvement and fat breakdown are cumulative processes, repetition tends to matter more for results than any single session.

What is the procedure like, and what should you watch for?

The procedure involves a fine needle delivering brief injections of gas at multiple points spaced 1 to 2 cm apart across the target area. Right after injection, as the gas spreads through the tissue, you may feel some pressure, a slight prickling sensation, or a feeling of puffiness in the area. This is a temporary effect from the CO2 filling the spaces between tissue, and it usually settles down within 10 to 30 minutes as the gas is absorbed.

Afterward, the area may look slightly red or bruised, which is a natural response to the widened vessels and the minor stimulation involved. Most of the time this fades within 2 to 5 days. That said, if you have a circulatory condition, certain lung conditions, or are pregnant, it's safest to discuss whether the treatment is appropriate with a medical professional beforehand.

Carboxytherapy isn't really a treatment that dramatically reduces fat in one go. It's closer to an ongoing circulation-support approach, and results tend to be more consistent when it's paired with everyday habits like diet and exercise.
